Question

The purpose of this assignment is for you to demonstrate your awareness of disparities in health care experienced by some ethnic and cultural populations, as well as your understanding of culturally competent strategies for addressing those challenges.

Create a visually interesting and well organized 6-panel brochure (you may use a Word template as a starting point) that could be used as an informative handout to assist health care professionals in providing culturally competent care to a disadvantaged patient population.

In your brochure:

List some reasons why specific patient cultural populations face challenges when it comes to receiving competent care.

Identify strategies that can be used to overcome those challenges.

Include professional resources that could be used by healthcare providers to learn more about disadvantaged patient groups and how to become more culturally competent when treating them. Briefly describe why each resource would be helpful.

You are encouraged to include graphics in your brochure. Provide citations in standard format on the last panel of the brochure for any sources where you find information or images.

Remember that this brochure is for professionals in a health care setting—both the information and look of the brochure should be geared to this audience.

Explanation / Answer

Provide the best care for cultural diversity

Healthcare experiencing inequality is a very common issue among ethnic and cultural minorities.

How to provide the best care for patients of all backgrounds

When working in health care, one must remember that you’re dealing with a person with unique experiences and backgrounds. Always keep the patient as an individual at the front of your mind when trying to find the best way to assist them.

This brochure is here to help you incorporate a more inclusive approach to health care that looks to end inequality in how health care is experienced by patients from all the diverse backgrounds of our society.

End health disparity now

Health disparity is the difference in health status amongst different social groups, such as ethnic and racial minorities. Some groups are at a higher risk of certain diseases and have higher death and suffering tolls. You can help end this now by providing flexible, individual-oriented care.

How can you adapt your care to different backgrounds?

Keep in mind that:

Most ethnic and cultural minorities in the US suffer from great health disparities, with shorter life expectancies and poorer health compared to the country's average. This is a disparity linked to how care is provided. Not all of us come from the same cultural, economic and social backgrounds, and a professional’s care should adapt to that.

How you can provide better care for all patients

Always try to make the patient feel comfortable, keep your questions neutral and open, and never make assumptions. This is what’s central here.

Try to build trust, and let them know you’re willing to work with them in order to get them the best treatment they can.

If you are unsure about something, consult with a colleague that deals with more diverse populations well.

You also need to establish with your patient what their expectations are, and ask them to allow you to learn by explaining things you might miss when providing health care to that specific person.

With experience and empathy, you’re gold

If you can understand what it must feel like to get unfair treatment, especially in an area as crucial to a person’s wellbeing as health, then you’re empathizing, keep that up through the whole process. Get in your patient's shoes.

You might hit a few hitches along the ride, but with practice, you’ll soon become one more health care professional fighting against inequality.
