Question
The Scenario: You are working as a Project Analyst on a large Information Technology implementation project. Your job is by no means a senior position, but you play a critical role in the implementation project and are well respected by your peers. One of the Project Managers, Julie Fragrance, often uses abusive language on conference calls and around the office that is riddled with belittling, aggressive comments, and also very explicit. This individual has been with the company for close to ten years, while you have only worked there for 1.5 years. Julie is very well respected by mid-level executives and you see them frequently going to lunch together. In essence, it appears that Julie has a lot of political power within the organization, even though she is not necessarily in a management position. You have bitten your tongue for quite a while, but the tension and aggressive behavior that Julie brings to the work environment has run its toll. You love your job, but dislike the work environment that Julie often creates. What Would You Do? How would you approach this scenario? Explain your answer in detail and compare it with your fellow students.
Explanation / Answer
In this situation I will initially try to have a conversation with Julie herself and she is a senior employee of the organiAtion, I will try to make her understand the issue that we may experience because of her inappropriate behavior in the workplace. The Juniors follow the senior and she is creating an example in this context and that is turning out to be negative as well. I hope that the meeting will actually make things better for me and the workplace as a whole but if situations do not change and deteriorate again, I will try to communicate the situation to the HR in order to make them take care of the situation because each and every employee should receive fair treatment in this context and the level of seniority should not be a factor.
