Question

The United State Nuclear Regulatory Committee (USNRC) was created as an independent agency by Congress in 1974 to ensure the safe use of radioactive materials from power generation to medicine and other uses. On April 13, 2018, the USNRC issued a notice of violation to FirstEnergy Nuclear Operating Company (FENOC) for a matter of low to moderate safety significance during an inspection of the Davis-Besse Nuclear Power Station. The government has a responsibility, through its various agencies to protect the health, safety, and welfare of the citizens. Inspections and subsequent enforcement action (if necessary) of nuclear power facilities is one avenue for that goal to be accomplished. In the notice of violation, a re-inspection of the facility is required to verify that the corrective actions had been made so that the safety functions within the reactor process operate within specifications. I agree with the action as it identifies the issue, provides an opportunity for correction, a follow-up verification, and an opening for the company to appeal the findings. Of the many things that can be very dangerous for many people, nuclear power plants need specific and heightened scrutiny. The effects of a catastrophic impact would result in the loss of many lives and have a significant adverse economic impact. Respond to the summary with Do you agree with their position? State at least one reason why or why not. Describe the effect the regulatory agency they have referenced has on the business environment.

Explanation / Answer

Definitely this type of approach is very helpful in determining possible structure of operation for nuclear reactors. Any disaster in this specific kind of environment can be very harmful for the society as nuclear disasters are highly dangerous. Emission of radioactive products from the reactor would be very harmful for the society as it would leave impact for generations.
Providing proper assessment and Audit of these reactors and giving them a chance to improve is a better opportunity as most of the times reactors would not be able to understand the problems involved in the organisation as inside problems are usually barely assessed by internal structure. As provision of these regulations and inspection would enable reactor to improve their services and to find better availability of operation that would also provide positive impact on the overall serviceability and standard creation for all of the reactors operating in the same state.
This regulatory agency definitely has a great impact on the overall availability of opportunities for increasing and maintaining nuclear reactors for benefit of the citizens.
