Question

MGMT591 Leadership and Organizational Behavior - Submit a written Brief Proposal of Research containing the following: a brief overview of the chosen organization and your role in it; a brief narrative description of the organizational problem that you would like to research and resolve; a preliminary problem statement in the form of a researchable question; and which CO topic your problem is related to. I was thinking of doing my proposal on SHC (Sears Holding Corporation) but am having a hard time narrowing down a topic I'd like to research. Maybe something along the lines of their rapidly decreasing online sales. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

Explanation / Answer

Company overview and my role- The organization that I chose is Elsevier which is a multinational publishing company and my role is a Journal Manager. The company publishes scholarly journals and books relevant to the scientific society. The publishing works are useful to the researchers, scientists and other scholars. My role as a Journal Manager is to ensure that the publishing of the journals are on-time. I have to manage the end-to-end publication of a portfolio of journals.

Organizational problem that I would like to research and resolve- To reduce the time taken to publish articles in the journals. By default, an article takes 28 days to reach its final publishing stage. A journal is a collection of articles. Hence, all the relevant articles take approximately 28 days to be published if there are no challenges. However, the time-frame would go beyond the 28 days if there are author queries, copyright issues, editor queries, reviewer queries, supplier or typesetter issues, etc. My research is to reduce the time taken to publish the article to enhance the Impact Factor of the journals.

Problem statement-

We want all of the articles to be published seamlessly in the production process without any challenges or defects where everyone is aware and informed about the importance and the outcomes of the 24-hour publishing.

In the current competitive industry, we encounter with too many bottlenecks in the publishing process. If we ignore this problem, the resources needs to be re-allocated which costs heavily to the company; also if we miss the customer deadlines which is critical for a journal publishing, then we could result in huge loss in the revenue, Service Level Agreement penalties, loss of business and damage to the reputation and goodwill of the company.

The methods to research and reduce the bottlenecks are lean six sigma to focus on the 24-hour publishing to improve the Impact Factor of the journals.
