Answer 1: I would like to quote the example of Walmart.
Mission : Saving people money so they can live better.
Vision: To be the best retailer in the hearts and minds of consumers and employees.
Walmart has already established itself as one of the largest retailers in the world. Also it has been established that ,for Walmart the top two priorities are customers and employees.It has benefited both the employees(They work in safe and regulated work environment with minimum wage compliance and avail many employee benefit schemes apart from the huge employment opportunities generated[1.5 million + associates]) and customers ( They benefit from the huge range of quality products offered at extremely low and affordable prices[Everyday low prices]). The mission statement also manifests these facts. These mission and vision statements are ingrained in the company DNA. Walmart has followed cost leadership strategy (basis Porter's model) and market penetration and market development growth strategies.
Using porter's model ,Walmart is maintaining extremely low cost of production and is able to offer everyday low prices. This has been supported by the adoption of Information technology to maximize operational efficiency( POS integration for better forecasting, statistical process control, inventory control) .
As part of market penetration strategy they offer discounts, promotions and incentives to customers of the existing market to increase sales volume and expand customer base. As a secondary strategy they also expand to overseas markets(presence in 25+ countries), open new stores to tap new customers.They have also started devising innovative techniques to improve customer satisfaction like dropship, cross docking etc.
Answer 2: Simply adopting a mission and a vision statement would not help them to be part of the everyday life of the employees. In order to achieve the goals and objectives it is neccessasy to ensue that the mission and vision resonates with the goals and objectives of the employees becuse they are your mouthpieces and flag bearers of your mission and vision.
The following strategies can be taken to make mission or vision statements a part of your employees' everyday lives:
1.Make mission or vision statement as an integral aspect of employee onboarding ,training and performance assessment.Provide a printed copy of your mission or vision statement to the employees and make sure they read them over and over again and deliberate as to how it is related to the day to day operations of the organization.You should be ready to address their doubts, queries and explain them the importance of the mission or vision statements. The job profile should be designed to ensure it is related to the mission and vision statements and each employee should be asessed based on their adherence to mission and vision statements while dispensing their job responsibilities.For each new assignment discuss how it would help in achieving the mission or vision statements. Discuss the mission and vision during meetings,trainings and also ensure proper training the employees to achieve the mission and vision.Employees should take a sense of belonging and pride in the mission and vision statements.
2. Make your mission and vision statement highly visible in your office interiors, company website, employee pads,calenders, screensavers and desktop displays of the systems used by the employees,standys,banners in meeting rooms, canteen,gym ,common gathering places etc. It should always be visually appealing and remind them continuously to inculcate the mission and vision statements in their lives .
