Answer: The incentives are the extra payments or recognition which an employee may get when he performs over his performance targets. The incentives are designed to motivate the employees to outperform. For this purpose it is essential that the incentives are designed by keeping in mind the factors which can motivate the employees. The organizational managers work in direct or indirect touch of the employees and understand more clearly that what factors can motivate the employees. Hence of the HR managers work with the organizational managers, then they can develop efficient and effective incentives plan which suits the needs of the employees and can motivate them better. With information about the motivational behaviours of the employees better incentive plans can be created.
Incentives if properly planned and developed as per the motivational needs encourage the employees to perform better. The good employees are always ready to make extra efforts for extra incentives. They are rational people who are motivated to get more for greater effort. Extra efforts result in extra performance. It is because of this link of the incentives with the performance, that the organizations use them as a tool for improving employee performance.
