Ad Hominem fallacy

The ad hominem fallacy makes an inappropriate reference to a person’s character or behavior.

How can you distinguish between an inappropriate ad hominem attack and an appropriate use of evidence

Provide an example of a situation where making a reference to a person’s behavior or character might be appropriate, and probably would not be ad hominem

Explanation / Answer

The ad hominem fallacy to refers to character assassination or inappropriate description of a personal nature and behaviour and this help in distinguishing it from appropriate use of evidence.

^^For example, if we have a person who is adulterous, by use of appropriate evidence we ca start that the person is likely to be polygamous as a monogamous marriage won't serve him better. However, using an ad hominem attack, if the person is a lecturer, we can make uninformed claims that he cannot make a good teacher. There is no correlation between the ability to teach and being adulterous.

Ad hominem fallacy destroy someone's reputation based on his character
