Explanation / Answer

The steps involved in the process of decision making can be listed as follows:

- Identify the decision- understanding the situation and its need to make a decision is important firstly. The process is at such a stage that it can only go further feasibly if a decision is made. Hence identifying the need for making the decision is important.

- Collect relevant information- Decision cannot be made based on imaginative thoughts or wrong and incomplete information. Hence gathering the right information which will support making the right decision is essential. This includes all information that can affect how the decision is going to be.

- Identify the alternatives- A situation can be solved in many ways and hence the decisions that can be taken are also many. Hence finding out all alternatives to solve a particular decision is important. It helps in evaluating the alternatives and choosing the best one feasible for the situation.

- Evaluate the alternatives- The alternatives identified in the previous step are then analyzed and measured one by one to understand the pros and cons of each so that the best suitable alternative can be implemented.

- Choose among alternatives- After weighing each alternative individually we are in a position to clearly understand which alternative will work as the best one for the scenario. Hence that alternative will be chosen and the decision will be taken based on it.

- Take action- The step of finally taking the decision and communicating it to all the people concerned is next. Also, the action involves clearing the concerns if any regarding the decision. Hence implementing the decision and taking action on it is an essential step.

- Review decision and its effects- The decision once taken is not just left to be followed, but instead a proper review of how the decision is being followed and what is its impact on the people related to it. This process gives an option to change the decision if required due to some errors that can be seen in the implementation of it.

My approach to individual decision making will be an analytical approach. I would prefer this approach over others because it helps one to think rationally and decide. It helps in analyzing the success factor of each alternative for the decision and its effects. A planned and systematic decision-making process takes place leaving no loose ends or flaws in the process. Except for some unforeseeable events all other consequences of taking a decision is clear and measured so along with having the best decision one is prepared for what he can face by going with that decision. In case the decision has to be changed, then also a clear step by step analysis is available which can help in having a clear understanding of where and why the change is required. Hence rational or analytical approach is the most practical approach which I would take in individual decision making.
