Question

Question 1: Choose one country and identify and discuss 3 major issues that might impact the safety of expatriates living abroad in this country. As a Global HR manager, what steps would you take to ensure the safety of expats in your organization who were posted to this environment?

Question 2: Read the following article: Is Monitoring Employee Communications Lawful? Then do some research on the country you chose for question 1 and explain whether the outcome would have been the same or different. Support your response with references.

Explanation / Answer

The three major issues expatriates can face in another country can be:-

1. Psychological adjustment

2. Fear of acceptance

3. Cultural differences

These factors could create risks for the expatriates as well as compromise their safety, especially psychological factors which will not allow the expatriates to be fully functional and cognisant to the environment.

In order for to.ensure their safety. The HR department should follow a training regime and protocol which should allow the individuals selected for the process of relocation to be trained, evaluated and monitored in order to determine they're psychological as well as emotional well be well being. There should be provisions for them to help them adjust especially in the initial time. period, as well as compensation, should be present for any and everything they might need adjustment with such as spouse allowance, school, and house relocation etc.

For example, if we select India as the country where the expatriates would stay and work in. There is the presence of a vast amount of. cultural differences. Not only that but the style of living as well as the outlook of the people is quite different from say America. This is why the expatriate would have problems adjusting to the change.

2. If we take. into account India and their monitoring laws at the workplace, there are no legislative laws and statutes that explicitly allows or condemns such practices, therefore, a number of companies have this policy whereas others just either allow unmonitored access or restricts the access to using communication methods outside of business use.

The same.cannot be said for other countries such as where EU is the governing body because they have explicit rules and regulations in place regarding the use of communication facilities for the private use of individuals.
