Question

Many global cities have absorbed new migration from individuals and families seeking opportunity that has created an imbalanced landscape comprised of stable, affluent areas and instable, poor areas such as the slums. Slums areas across the world are growing at such a rapid and unsustainable rate and have posed great risks to the population that resides in them. In addition, the slums place a very large burden on cities that have limited resources. Ultimately, who do you believe is most responsible for helping improve the conditions of those living in slum conditions? Is it government? Private business? Non-profit and non-governmental organizations? The citizens themselves?

Explanation / Answer

I believe that this is a very common and prevalent issue and most commonly in conditions or in countries that have been economically backward or developing at this juncture. I believe that slums are not at all expected in a city because it actually pushes the city backwards and therefore the government primarily should look at it on a serious note. We cannot primarily hold the government responsible in this context because it is the duty of the corporate organizations as well who are doing business in the city and as part of their corporate social responsibility, they can actually think about helping the people which will also give the organizations a competitive advantage over others.

A city having a slum actually raises various questions regarding the security of people residing and also the well being of them as well. I believe that the government should think about it and ensure that they are at least able to provide the basic amenities for sustaining life and that is shelter to the citizens and if a government is actually incapable, they may think on this issue and make amendments as well.
