Question
Overarching managerial issues in logistics are comprised of several “ilities” such as productivity, quality, sustainability, complexity and possibility (risk). In many instances, these aspects are interrelated and correlate with one another. For example, although implementing a new reverse logistic process (sustainability) may positively influence brand recognition (quality), it may also cause interruptions to the company’s supply chain (productivity). Discuss how the five “ilities” are interrelated and correlate with one another (negatively, positively or neutrally). Use examples to help illustrate your case. Can you think of additional “ilities” not mentioned here?
Explanation / Answer
Productivity is related to quality in a complex manner. A fast producing system might be compromising on the product quality, but enhancing the other aspects of quality ( brand recognition as an efficient producer). It relates to the sustainability in positive way, as a productive system is likely to be more sustainable.Complexity is a neutral term as a productive system need not be complex. It also relates to the risk in both ways, as a highly productive system is more vulnerable to variations, but reduces the risk of inviabliy of process.
Quality relates to sustainability in a positive way, as a sustainable business correlates with high quality. The complexity is again a neutral factor, where high quality need not be compex issue. Risk is related negatively to quality where a high quality product significantly reduces the risks of customer migration, reworks and returns.
Complexity is often unrelated to the given factors in most cases, except where conflicting issues are present or multiple stakeholders to be managed to ensure the productivity, quality and sustainability. However, the risk often increases with complexity where the default is more likely to happen when a system is too complex to manage.
