Throughout this chapter we've discussed ways that groups and groups make recommendations, they've ofien "fallen in can perform well or perform poorly, which leaves an over love" with a particular idea and are no longer thinking ration riding question: are the negative aspects of collaboration ally. These problems of heuristics and biases (introduced ear so severe that we should avoid making decisions and work- the book) can be magnified when a group of people ing in groups? are making a decision collectively. Look no further than Groups and teams need more time to process multiple the US. Congress in recent years to see instances in which piece of information and coordinate what they know. Dane a group decision-making process might lead to a worse out- heman and colleagues also warn that when commitees come than if one consistent course ofaction were pursue So what can managers do to minimize these biases? The Questions problems of coordination and collaboration suggest that . Think abou a time when you 've been in a group that we should invoke group decision making only when it a pears that pooling information will lead to better decisions well. Explanation / Answer

Answer 1: This example is related with the quality improvement initiative and in one of the program it was needed to understand the business justification from the focus group. However, the pre meeting agenda was set and questionnaire was requested to be filled by the focus group members for the preparation and to discuss on the given business problem. When meeting was called and all members assembled in the meeting, the focus group size was more than 10 members; it was found that with more members diverse inputs were collected but with no consensus. This could be due to the size of the group and could be due “social loafing” where an individual does not put effort when involved in group activities.

Answer 2: Decision could have accurate and efficient if less numbers of members would have been the part of the focus group. Small size groups are quicker in finishing activities compared to the bigger size group. In this case individuals perform better to achieve results. Other strategies, such as giving objective task to everyone; selecting the highly motivated individuals; peer reviews; some type of reward for unique offerings by an individual.

Answer 3: Individual decisions are effective in routine tasks, for example, when a manager supposed to offer his feedback on certain policy; when to put his team member on performance improvement plan, who is low performer. Whereas group decisions are effective in strategic tasks, for example, when steering committee need to take decision on the infrastructure set up for the organization.
