BOOK TEXT
"The curriculum is never simply a neutral assemblage of knowledge, somehow appearing in the texts and classrooms of a nation. It is always part of a selective tradition, someone's selection, some group's vision of legitimate knowledge"
—Michael Apple
ANSWER
In my opinion, a curriculum is indicative of the choices that the nation makes. An individual may define what needs to ho as the study matter for the pupils but it is always a larger community that gets into a discussion and the final acceptance of the subject matter occurs. The community and the opinion of the larger group who makes the decision is reflected by what course thay had undertaken and what choices theyhave made in their lives in the course matter.
A country that has been supressed for long and rises to get its free of the shackles always has the subject around the history of the nation, if the leaders feel that their next generation needs to derive learnings from the past to move into the future. However a group of leaders who are ambitious and are focussed on the growth in future, do not encourage histroy to be a part of curriculum rather only the new technology to be propagated.
Explanation / Answer
Yes, the curriculum is a part of selective tradition, someone's selection, some group's vision of legitimate knowledge. What the students of a country should learn and what not to learn, what subjects to focus on and what not to focus on are largely determined by groups who select the curriculum for schools. They design the curriculum in such a way that they know what the youth and children of a nation should focus on. The group that selects the curriculum for a nation believes on imparting legitimate knowledge. By legitimate knowledge they mean things or subjects that everyone must know or be aware of. For imparting such legitimate knowledge the selction of what type of academic or what curriculum is really crucial and can also be affected by other larger institution other than schools such as the political , economical or technical factors.
The enviornmental factors can also alter the kind of curriculum and the academics of a nation and to a lrge extent depends upon the fact that what they want to acquire or come in terms with in the future. Because today's kids are tommorrow's citizens and these groups who select the curriculum can stream the kids into a particular objective ato acquire that through selctive curriculum. For example, if a nation is currently facing ecological imbalance and health issues, the selction group might design the curriculum in such a way which would help the nation in improving it's ecological and health issues in the due course of time. If the nation want to preserve a particular tradition that have been followed for a long period of time they might design the curriculum in a such a way as to include this part of tradition and continue it's working for a long time more.
