Main theories of motivation

I would to start by saying that one of the most important key factors in order to achieve success not only on business but in life itself is motivation, the ability to motivate other people.

Each and every one of us is different therefore we are motivated by different things. The challenge in every organization is to find out what is the one thing that motivates the employees.

The most common thins is money, who doesn’t want a rise right? Unfortunately there are times were the companies are not on a position of incrementing salaries (even though workers might deserve it)

Hierarchy of needs

The well-known Maslow develop this theory of motivation. Basically it categorizes the human needs into 5 different segments or categories, from the most basic ones like shelter, food, to the need for self-actualization. On this theory Maslow explains that once a need is satisfied the person will seek to achieve the next level of need.

If we applied this theory to work, we can say that managers need to understand the level of need of each employee to know what motivates them. When a new person comes to the company and has not work for a long time he is going to be motivated by the need of basic survival, and there will be other type of employees with more time in the company that will be motivated by achieving self-actualization.

Carrot and Stick

This theory of motivation was attributed to Jeremy Bentham and it classifies the motivation into 2 basic elements: incentives and fear.

There are going to be workers that are motivated by the desire of an additional compensation, a new status, a new position, more responsibilities, anything that will help to climb the corporate leader and be on top.

On the other hand we will have the employees who are motivated out of the fear of losing their job, not being able to perform accordingly and eventually having to change job.

Motivation-Hygiene Theory

The motivation-Hygiene theory also known as the two factory theory was developed by Frederick Herzberg. What this theory implies is that different factors in the work environment result in either satisfaction or dissatisfaction and the author of the theory refer to them as “hygiene” factors.

Factors that lead to satisfaction include achievement, recognition and advancement, while those causing dissatisfaction include work conditions, salary and peer relationships. In general, the theory puts forth that supervisors must be able to effectively manage factors leading to satisfaction and dissatisfaction to successfully motivate employees.

Drive Theory of motivation

According to this theory, people are motivated to take certain actions in order to reduce the internal tension that is caused by unmet needs. For example people might be motivated to eat a sandwich in order to reduce the internal state of hungry.
