Srgt. Frank Meyers, a local police officer, is approached by an elderly lady, Ms. Bunt, at a donut shop. She indicates there has been a lot of noisy parties and drinking in her normally quiet neighborhood and she is fearful. She offers him an extra $100.00 to patrol her street more thoroughly while on duty this weekend. Meyers clears the agreement with both the city attorney and the mayor before agreeing to it. If he partols as promised and she decides not pay Meyers, may he enforce the terms? Fully explain your answer with a sound legal basis.

Although the question is about the law of contract and not that of Operations Management, let me try to answer.

On the face of it the agreement appears to be valid, as there is clear cut offer, consideration and acceptance etc for the law of contract. Now the question is about the purpose and the legality of the contracting parties.

Srgt. Frank Meyers is a local police officer, there are serious doubts about his accepting extra money for extra work getting in conflict with his normal pay for normal duties. In his favour he got the agreement cleared with both the city attorney and the mayor but does that mean it is legally valid, is a question mark.

Secondly, the purpose to check noisy parties and drinking in the normally quiet neighborhood on payment basis by a local police officer. While doing so, it may infringe the civil rights of others who may have the permission to engage in noisy parties including drinking.
