Question
A customer service representative at an electronics store is surfing the Internet using one of the store's display computers. She accesses a web site that shows graphic images of crime scenes. Meanwhile a customer passes by noticing the images and becomes offended. Another customer service representative is behind the counter, using the store's computer to access the company customer database. A female customer asks him why he is laughing. He turns the computer screen around to show her the record of another customer owing more than $10,000. Is there anything wrong with these activities?
When answering or responding to discussion questions be sure to write, in your own words, compelling arguments and cite brief references other than the textbooks where appropriate. Also, be sure to consistently establish a linkage between the material being discussed, your workplace, or individual research. Most importantly, be specific in your response
Explanation / Answer
In first situation, the customer service representative was watching disturbing images in the store’s display computers. It is highly unethical act. The customer care representative should not use such websites in public places that can offend the customers.
In second case the customer service representative was doing illegal as well as unethical act. He is not authorized to use company’s customer database to accesses confidential information of customer. Besides this he was sharing the personal details of a customer with another one and mocking him. This is also an unethical act.
Hence, in both the situation the customer service representatives were doing illegal and unethical acts.
