The video clip “Thinking on the Job” in the Webtext this week illustrates the importance of critical thinking, especially in work contexts. Define the concept of critical thinking in your own words. Discuss a time in either your work or personal life in which you needed to be able to use critical thinking to either solve a problem or acquire a skill.
Determine the manner in which you would show a potential employer that you possess solid critical thinking skills. Give your opinion on whether or not you believe that individuals can increase their critical thinking skills. If you believe that they can, explain certain steps that individuals can take to improve this skill.
Explanation / Answer
Critical thinking is a way of deciding whether a problem or topic is true, false, partly true or, partly false. I think it is more about considering all options and coming to a justifiable solution that you feel comfortable with. I’ve worked in many different types of trades in the last 20+ years. These trades consist of auto mechanics, home improvement, information technology, and manufacturing. I have always had the need to problem solve and use critical thinking to overcome obstacles in various situations. If I do something I like to learn everything possible about it, the in’s and the out’s so to speak. I have had several occasions where I had no idea what to do but I tried several angles and possibilities until I figured out how to do it correctly.
Usually at a new occupational interview I try to impress the interviewer. I usually explain that I am proven success as a turn-around expert with a talent for leading teams through change. I am a creative visionary with an exceptional ability to communicate and motivate.I also have a proven ability to take charge of a project and identify and resolves problems to come to a completion on time. My experience in the job market along with my references usually indicates to them that I am a very productive and critical thinking problem solver.
I feel that some people there is just no hope for in learning critical thinking skills. Some people have and are great at it while there are some that have the potential to learn good critical thinking skills. I think it varies on who has really been introduced to a “thinking” environment. Some people never have to experience using thought in their occupation so they do not need to bother with learning it because they are content. I think if a person wants to learn critical thinking skills then they need to acquire information and take the time to learn what subjects they are interested in.
