Suppose that you have been assigned to be the leader (project manager) of a project designed to evaluate which new city in Missouri should be the first location for a national restaurant chain (think Olive Garden). You are to do whatever necessary from the selection of the location through the opening of the restaurant.
Work with your "project colleagues" in this discussion to brainstorm 5-10 of the highest level Work Breakdown Structure tasks that would need to be completed.
For one of these highest level tasks (ideally one that someone else has not selected), break that task down to the next level of the 3-5 tasks that need to be performed to complete that task.
In subsequent postings, discuss the types of leadership personnel would you need on your team, which tasks those personnel would be assigned to and any thought on how you would you organize the project?

WBS tasks and subtasks.
1. Study of demographical factors of region.- breakup of population on basis of age, income, education, employment pattern and mapping it with the target audience. Assessment of spending capacity. Study of size of household.
2. Study of cultural aspects of the region.- Cultural heritage of the region defining the food preferences and its match with the products of company. Tendency to eat out. Culinary heritage. Socialising factors and their effect on a restaurant business.
3. Study of consumer behavior of the region - Food habits of the population, pattern of consumption ( on the go, order at home or dining out), spending pattern ( ticket size of an average meal), timing of meals, staple items of a meal ( and if they match with the company's expertise)
4. Study of competitive scenario of the cities.- Competitors in the cities and their market standing. Their USPs. Overall market size and its response.
5. Study of business potential of the cities.- Study of business potential in terms presence of tourism, education, business, healthcare or other businesses that may influence sales. Study of future projects and events coming up that may boost the business by augmentation of market size. Analysis of risks that might afefct the food business adversely.
6. Study of availability of infrastructure and resources.- Assessment of infrastructure of the city, viz. transportation, communication, real estate etc. Availability of suitable skilled and unskilled manpower with ease and at affordable wages. Availability of raw material and other consumables. Study of laws and regulations governing the business.
The team
1. Team leader - For overall execution and monitoring of the project.
2. Subject matter experts - One for each area of study. They will formulate the research designs and implement the project while guiding the surveyors in conducting the study
3. Surveyors - To conduct the survey - One for each area of study.
4. Statistician / analyst - One. He /she will conduct the analysis of data to provide insights and help the decision makers with the findings.
The project will start with formulation of research design by the teams ( approx, duration 2 weeks), survey by the surveyors( 8 weeks) and analysis by the analysts to finish off with recommendations. ( 2 weeks)
