Question
You operate a 20-employee, 40-room, non-chain motel in Platteville, Wisconsin. Your employees seem to like their work atmosphere, but you have been experiencing a high and rapid turnover rate during the past three months, especially in the positions of front desk clerk and housekeeper. You suspect this is because other local businesses are offering higher wages and more benefits.
You decide to prepare a wage survey with a budget of $1000 to assess whether your suspicions are true. Your intent is to maintain a "meet" pay strategy. Your last job evaluation resulted in the following job structure:
Manager: $15.00/hour
Assistant Manager: 13.00/hour
Bookkeeper: 11.50/hour
Maintenance Mechanic: 10.50/hour
Front Desk Clerk: 9.00/hour
Housekeeper: 8.50/hour

Define the market to survey and give your rationale for each decision made.
Decide how many employers to survey and give the rationale for your decisions.
Decide which jobs to put on the survey and give your rationale for the approach you choose.
Decide how you will collect the survey information and give your rationale.
NOTE: Please be very specific in all your responses for full credit.
Explanation / Answer
1. The market to be surveyed
For front desk operator -Service oriented establishments like food outlets, hotels and resorts, tour and travel companies, grocery stores, healthcare and education establishments, government run offices that deal with public etc.
For houskeeping staff - Hotels, resorts, all kinds of food outlets, large offices, hospitals, Large retailers.
2. In each category 10 units will be sufficient for each of the two profiles. If 8 categories are chosen for survey, there will be 80 responses in each of the two categories which is good enough to make a rational decision.
3. The two jobs of housekeeper and front desk clerk will be put on the survey, given the highest turnover of these categories.
4. The data will be collected in form of direct responses from the employers, from placement agencies and job boards operating in the region and from the persons in employment on condition of anonymity. The multiple sources of information will eliminate errors due to biases and inflated figures.
