Question

The following is the current layout of a large storage area with medical supplies placed in rooms 1, 2, or 3 depending on their type. Based on the data regarding traffic and distance:

Enter the load-distance for the current layout. ___________

Redesign the layout to minimize load-distance. What is the total load-distance for your recommended layout? _________

Based on your redesign, which type of medical supplies are in the following locations? Please enter your response to this as a capital X, Y, or Z.

Location A ________

Location B ________

Location C ________

Distances between locations (in feet):

Daily traffic (number of trips) between rooms:

LOCATION FROM TO A B C A --- 50 30 B 80

Explanation / Answer

Current Layout: X(1)-A, Y(2)-B. Z(3)-C

Load-distance for the current layout = distance between A and B * Number of trips between 1 and 2 + distance between A and C * Number of trips between 1 and 3 + distance between B and C * Number of trips between 2 and 3

= 50*(27+2) + 30*5 + 80*(72+29)

= 9680

Improved layout: Room 2 and 3 have the highest number of trips between them. So, these should be located nearest to each other. Locations A and C are closest. So 2 and 3 should be located in A and C. 1 should be located in B. Improved layout is - X(1)-B, Y(2)-A, Z(3)-C

Load-distance for improved layout = distance between B and A * Number of trips between 1 and 2 + distance between B and C * Number of trips between 1 and 3 + distance between A and C * Number of trips between 2 and 3

= 50*(27+2) + 80*5 + 30*(72+29)

= 4880

Based on your redesign, which type of medical supplies are in the following locations? Please enter your response to this as a capital X, Y, or Z.

Location A__Y__

Location B__X__

Location C__Z__
