IMPOSED CRISIS:
At 1 AM on Friday your high profile Chief Technology Officer, hits a pedestrian in a crosswalk 1 block from your main offices and drives off. A gas station surveillance camera showing your CTO leaving the scene after the accident occurs. The pedestrian is in critical condition. The entire company leadership team had taken the CTO out to dinner after the work day ended to celebrate a hugely profitable quarter they had just concluded. The celebration got rather enthusiastic at the bar across the street from your corporate offices and the CTO had left the bar at 12:45 AM. It is now 6 AM on Saturday and your COO just hung up the phone with the Police Department and indicated that they have the CTO in custody and they want to speak with everyone that was at the bar with him last night.
Explanation / Answer
In this particular crisis, the threats posed are from the legal and ecomomical environmental forces. As the CTO had hit the pedestrian on the road and leaves, he has violated the norms. The legal rules can impose penalties and punishment for the same. The police department inquiry will be a concern for the employees and the company. The company celebration dinner will be investigated for finding the reasons for the accident. This will impact the morale and work of the employees. But as a part of the process, they need to cooperate with the Police.
There are resources in our industry or government that can help us in our crisis management planning. In this crisis, the CTO can be confined to custody for breaking the rules. This may impact the work environment as well as the goodwill of the company. The company can take help of the legal resources to prevent a long term custody of the CTO. Fine imposed and penalties need to be borne. The company should issue an apology on the behalf of CTO for the accident injuring a pdestrian. The company can initiate help to the victim in terms of medical and financial help to overcome from the accident. This may help to mitigate the crisis. Also, the company should have employees to step in fo taking any work responsibilities that may suffer due to the crisis.
There are ways of better partnering with industry and government agencies by taking corporate social responsibility initiatives and spreading awareness about the rules and policies. The company can also organise workshop on Road safety rules and the potential harm of overlooking caution while driving for its employees.
