Question

Managers come in many packages -- not just "business" managers. A mother or father can be a good manager, as well as a teacher or coach. Think of a good manager that you have observed in some capacity outside of business or career, and describe what makes you feel he or she was excellent at managing people, time, projects or processes. What qualities of this informal manager double up with qualities that you think are important to have in the business world? Name 2-3 of these qualities and describe how managing in other situations relates to managing for business.

Explanation / Answer

That is so truly said that managers do come in all packages-and not just business managers. I have seen plenty of people in my life, who may not be working with a top notch corporate, but are excelling at managing people, time, resources and what not! Be it my super-efficient mom who seemingly never gets tired or be it the high school teacher who made me what I am today. I will take about my friend today, who also was the School captain. Now this guy, he was AMAZING! I believe, he was an extra ordinary leader. His skills, his management of people, his value for the deadlines- they all have made me go awe a lot many times. So, we had worked together on a lot of inter-school projects. I don’t know what magic he did, but I can’t remember even a single soul who didn’t listen to him. I guess that is the most wonderful quality, a manager should possess. His communication, his way of doing work, his motivations, I believe everyone loved him for this. I remember, how there always has been a unanimous vote on him being the leader on almost everything. He was a hard worker. He believed in his team. He helped us on every point. He made us learn things, and at the same time he learnt from us. He motivated us to never give up, he made us believe that success might be on just the next door. He always used to keep a very jolly and light environment. Jokes were appreciated, and so were the inputs. He listened to his team. He never had the attitude of a leader, we all were one. I believe, he is a great manager. His such behaviour with his team, always helped us in ways unexplained. Though, there had been conflicts at times but he always found a way to eliminate them. These are the qualities, I believe that a manager should have inculcated within him. It’s great to work with such an amazing person.

If a person is able to bring out the best in others, if he sees the best in others, he definitely goes a long way. He handled people with these astounding qualities, at simple high school projects. These qualities would definitely help him grow at a business situation. With the essential people’s skill, he would be able to work out things, even if the dark clouds hover all around. His attitude of never giving up, always motivating peers, his hard work and diligence- these qualities are must need for any business manager. So yes, you can learn a lot about managing people, time from informal managers too. And why just informal managers, you can learn from everyone present around you. Another pre-requisite quality is, to challenge yourself and let yourself grow! I believe my experience helped you in some way.
