Question

In a minimum of 100 words state if you agree or disagree with the summary on how to use performance feedback to resolve a conflict?

3. Think of the last time you had a conflict with another person (e.g. at work, at school, etc.). Using the guidelines for performance feedback, how would you provide effective performance feedback to that person? Discuss. This question requires you to give some background of the situation so that the class can understand your points of view.

At my place of work, I felt as if I was doing more work than my co-worker. Every time it was time for my coworker to do their share of work they would disappear. I would then get stuck with finishing up both our projects in order to make sure we got done what was expected as well making sure our boss was satisfied. The first approach I would take in performance management is minimized criticisms. In order for the conversation to be taken in the right approach, I do not want to make my coworker defensive. This will cause more problems to the situation. Also, I would focus more on the feedback of behavior and results, and not the person. Simply saying, you did not finish the task we agreed upon that needed to complete. Lastly, focusing on the solving the problem is something to keep in mind. Trying to figure out what caused the problem and why can help come with the issue is addressed than a solution can be formed.

Guidelines list:

a) Feedback Should Be Given Frequently, Not Once a Year (Noe, Hollenbeck, Gernhart, & Wright, 2018, p.365).

b) Create the Right Context for the Discussion

c) Ask the Employee to Rate His or Her Performance before the Session

d) Encourage the Employee to Participate in the Session

e)Recognize Effective Performance through Praise

f) Focus on Solving Problems

g) Focus Feedback on Behavior or Results, Not on the Person

h)Minimize Criticism

i) Agree to Specific Goals and Set a Date to Review Progress

Explanation / Answer

I agree.

The summary adheres to nearly all the guidelines that have been provided except the first one. However, considering the unique situation, the first guideline cannot be followed in this instance. Having said that, there could be bit more emphasis on the setting the context so that the conversation between you and your colleague is on topic. I also think that, the approach to the conversation should be structured. For example, you could begin with a problem statement, possible solutions to those problems, feedback and then end the conversation in a positive note. This should help you in maintaining good relationship as well as provide feedback delicately to the colleague.
