Question

Which of the following would happen if a drug that blocks the action of DNA polymerases was introduced into cells just prior to infection with a virus with a DNA genome whose late gene expression depends on viral replication?

The virus would not be able to enter the host cell

The newly formed virions would be unable to leave the host cell

No viral proteins would be made and the virus would be unable to replicate

Early viral proteins would be made but the viral genome would be unable to replicate.

a

The virus would not be able to enter the host cell

b

The newly formed virions would be unable to leave the host cell

c

No viral proteins would be made and the virus would be unable to replicate

d

Early viral proteins would be made but the viral genome would be unable to replicate.

Explanation / Answer

D. Early viral proteins would be made but the viral genome would be unable to replicate.

Early viral proteins are necessary for entry of the viral genome into the host cell prior to replication of viral genome whereas late proteins are required for release of viral particles by cell lysis following replication.

DNA polymerase is an enzyme which is responsible for replication of viral DNA. But introduction of drug that blocks the action of DNA polymerases prior to viral infection will not inhibit the production of early proteins and the virus can enter the host cell. But it would prevent replication of genomic DNA of virus and inturn production of numerous virions

Due to inhibition of viral DNA replication synthesis of late proteins will also be prevented.
