Question

You will research the elements and core disciplines of various Lean Enterprise/Operational Excellence initiatives/approaches (for example Lean, Six Sigma, TQM, Theory of Constraints, ISO, Operational Excellence) for both manufacturing and services as it relates to your organization (or one with which you are familiar).

Write a 1,050- to 1,400-word paper in which you address the following points:

Describe briefly at least two core elements of Lean that you personally can use to improve your own organization or one you know.

Compare/contrast at least two operational excellence (Six Sigma, TQM, Theory of Constraints, ISO, etc.) approaches to a Lean Enterprise in the simple matrix given below.

Note: Matrix will need to be included in paper.

Evaluate how your selected organization's (your own or one you have chosen) vision supports Lean. If the organization's vision does not support Lean, re-write it yourself so that it does, and describe how your new version of the vision supports Lean showing old and new forms.

Assess how Lean Enterprises and/or other Operational Excellence initiatives/approaches can help lead an organization to change.

Taking Tata Motors as an example, Lean manufacturing is a management philosophy derived mostly from the Manufacturing Production System (MPS) for the Tata’s, an integrated socio-technical system which comprises its management philosophy and practices.

A socio-technical system is an approach to complex organisational design that recognises the interaction between people and technology in workplaces.

Sometimes referred to as the Tata’s Way, the MPS’ main objectives are to design out overburden and inconsistency and to eliminate waste. Waste not only refers to materials, but time, such as consumer time waiting for product or assistance and even waste of movement. The philosophy also relies on the process being as flexible as possible to reduce stress, which counts as overburden and generates waste.

Six Sigma emphasizes more on eliminating errors within processes. Lean strategy focuses on identifying needless steps that consume effort and resources.

These two methodologies offers relevant training which are in high demand across industries. These are applicable in manufacturing, finance, healthcare, IT, and more. Major benefits of Lean Six Sigma strategy includes customer satisfaction and cost reduction. It leads to revenue growth and productivity improvements.

Lean Six Sigma is a method which provides prized analytic and process skills. These skills are relevant to leadership positions.

ISO - Companies look in different ways to ISO-standards and make conscious choices in letting ISO-standards play a role in the organization. More and more companies choose to implement a standard not only from a customer demand, but also from an internal point of view and see more and more the added value for the company.

If you make the choice to let ISO-standards play a role within your organization, it also means to choose the appropriate standard(s). Which standard is relevant for your organization? What is relevant in the industry or field you are working in? What are your clients asking for? After answering these questions, you start with the implementation of an ISO-standard(s).

The implementation shall bring more confidence in the organization, more structure, more efficiency and gives you a competitive edge to your competition. After the implementation, your company can be certified and you can present with this certification to customers, business partners and competitors that you meet the requirements of the ISO-standard(s), and that it is controlled by a certification body.

Benefits –

·         Work more efficiently and effectively;

·         Achieve Growth;

·         Reducing risks;

·         A competitive edge over competitors;

·         Have an advantage in tender procedures.
