Question
Using a codon chart the mRNA sequence GCU-UCU-AAU-UCC-AUU-AUG is equal to the amino acid sequence ASNSIM.
By searching by nucleotide on BLAST (http://blast.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov) for the equivelant DNA coding strand (GCTTCTAATTCCATTATG) the matching nucleotide sequence is for "Schistosoma mansoni."
When searching on BLAST again but insead for the 6 amino acid letters (ASNSIM) the first named protein found not including those of "predicted, unnamed, hypothetical or unknown" nature is the protein "sporulation initiation inhibitor Soj [Lactobacillus curvatus]"
Why is there a difference in the two search outcomes?
Explanation / Answer
BLAST is providing information of the other sequence that can be coded by the same gene, present in Lactobacillus curvatus.
