Uncontrolled scope creep is when a project expands beyond its scope of work. In other words, the original plans or objectives of a project would be surpassed by other work, eventually resulting in delayed deliverable and budget overrun. Scope creep is the term described in a project that changes its scope along the way and misses out on the original project objective.
Personally speaking, I was part of a project that had the occurrence of scope creep. I was a Journal Manager for a multinational publishing company. I was incharge of publishing a portfolio of journals. I was part of a project wherein the objective was to replace the different text or coding used in the Journal Information Form (JIF) which is used for compiling issues and other details of the journal. JIF is journal specific. The Project Manager chose the project just to create visibility as it was obviously known. The project is extremely cumbersome and it is difficult to establish standard coding for all the journals as each journal is unique in its own way. Though the objective was clear the Project Manager failed to plan it effectively. There were lot of errors in each journal publication and the Project Manager was involved in solving the technical issue by collaborating with the application team. Sometimes the errors cannot be rectified hence most of the time the Project Manager was involved in problem solving the extensive errors. If there is an error in a journal’s publication, the Journal Manager, Team Manager, Department Head were all involved in the escalation. The society, Publisher or the author might escalate the noticed errors resulting in loss of production time. Thus, the project was totally abandoned due to its complexity and improper handled methods.
