Question

Randy Data, Chief Information Officer (CIO), felt the pressure of having to do. He knew he was not giving a number of matters the attention they deserved, including a special electronic medication administration record (EMAR) project he hastily assigned to his project manager, Tonya.

Tonya has already interrupted him with questions five times this week-and today was only Tuesday. He fully expected another such interruption at any time, and he decided that when it occurred he could react in one of three ways. He could: A. Review what Tonya had accomplished so far, show her where she might be going wrong and help her plan out the rest of the task. B. Assume active responsibility for the project and finish it himself OR C. Thoroughly and patiently answer her current question and hope that this would be sufficient to keep her going without having to interrupt him again. Question: To which of the three foregoing questions should Randy Data give the most serious consideration?

Explain Why? Submit one (1) single Microsoft Word document at the conclusion of Week Eleven no later than Sunday, by 11:59 PM EST. This is an individual assignment.

Explanation / Answer

Randy Data must give the most serious consideration to the option A. That is, he must review what Tonya had accomplished so far, show her where she might be going wrong and help her plan out the rest of the task.

From the case, it is clear that Tonya has a lot of question. This could be because either she did not understand the task correctly or she is facing difficulty in accomplishing them. The first option will help Randy be more clear to Tonya so that she understand the task in its entirety and can do the rest by herself. Moreover, it will also work as a check against the work done so far.

In addition to the above reason, there are other reasons why Randy should choose A over B and C. One of them is that, Tonya has already come to Randy five times in the past week. In spite of that, her doubts are not yet clear. This means either she is not completely asking all the doubts or she is not asking correct questions or Randy is unable to provide a satisfactory verbal answer. Due to these, Randy should avoid option C. Thoroughly and patiently answering all her questions and hoping that it will be sufficient may not be a good judgement.

The case also establishes the fact that Randy has other things to do. Naturally, if he takes over the project himself and completes it, he may not be able to perform other duties. As a result, option B is not ideal solution as well.

Option A, on the other hand will allow Randy to not only check Tonya’s work but will also help Randy direct Tonya in the way he perceives the project. This is by far the best course of action for Randy, Tonya and the project overall.
