They reject the idea that perceptions can be broken into component parts and gave us perceptual organization principles. These explain how humans organize sensations into perceptions. The most famous illusions come from the brain trying to figure out figure and ground, to carve the visual field into surfaces, to decide what is in front of the other. The first task in perceiving is to pick out features to emphasize in order to detect the figure from the surroundings or ground. What is emphasized is the figure and that which is ignored is the ground. These principles of perception work for all senses.
