Delia is a Dynamic character in Zora Neale Hurtson “Sweat" story . She embodies an example of a typical african american woman of the 1960`s who after fifteen years of physical and emotional abuse, transformed from being a religious submissive woman to aggressive and defensive character. Delia`s husband Sykes abuses her so that she can be tired of him and leave the house for his mistress who he has been cheating with. He looks for a snake and brings home to torture her but eventually he gets bitten by the snake. Righteousness has won over the wickedness. He called Delia for help at his dying point and Delia refused to help him.
    Delia is a hard working woman who washes white men dresses to sustain herself and the husband Sykes. She is religious and God Fearing. She holds strong her marital vows and is very timid ,scary and submissive to her husband. Her husband Sykes is a good-for- nothing man who does not work but torture Delia. She does the good thing you can dream of a good woman. “The whitest piles of things”. Delia is liked by village men and compares her to a sugar cane that has all the juice wrung from it.
Sykes dislikes the fact that Delia is washing Whiteman clothes and is frustrated. Sky is in no doubt feels emasculated and weakened that Delia is the Sole family provider. Sykes feels guilt that he cannot support Delia in her “sweat”. He is trying to regain some shred of his dignity and masculinity which he has lost. Sykes is upset by the loss of his masculinity control and decided to abuse delia to any level .Sykes comes home and scare her with his bully whip, pretending it’s a snake and laughs at her. She brushes it off and moves around him continuing her work. Sykes does not appreciate Delia doing her work and deliberately tries to ruin all her laundry she has done all weekend(140) . The extend of abuse make Delia so frightened that she does not even want to remain on the ground instead climbed to the hay barn. She cried and is possessed with fear. After a while, she reflected on her personal self and turns quiet, and begin to think . Violent anger grows inside of her and from this comes “an awful calm” .She conclude ,”Well,Ahdone de bes`Ah could .if things aint right,Gawd knows taint mah fault”. Sykes threreaten to send her out of the house so that his mistress can move in. She reminded him that it is her home that she has “sweat “for and his mistress is not welcome .(p141)
Delia started changing internally and begins to stand up to him .She wished the evil of her husband will come to hunt him as Hurston writes,”Oh well,whatever goes over the devil`s back ,is got to come under his belly.”(141) Delia change in character comes fifteen years of emotional and physical abuse. She has now decided that enough of all the abuse . Internal change start when they are sitting at dinner and Delia decides to talk to him about the snake. She first tries to reason with him and it doesn’t work. She then finally releases her anger and tells him, “ Ah hates you, Sykes,” she said calmly. “Ah hates you tuh de same degree dat Ah uster love yuh. Ah done took an’ took till mah belly is full up tuh mah neck”(145). When she finally had enough of Sykes’ torments, she defends herself against him with the iron skillet from the stove as Hurtson writes,”She seized the iron skillet from the stove and struck a defensive pose,which acts surprised him greatly,coming from her.”(141)
This threat from her for the first time in forever, stops Sykes from physically abusing her. At this moment in time, she realizes within herself she has some power over Sykes . However, she comes to the realization while laying on bed one night after their fight that the emotional and verbal abuse isn’t going to steal her soul. She internally decides to build a wall around herself and not to let Sykes tear her down anymore (141). He can say and do whatever he wants to but she isn’t about to let it bring her down. She also changed her church so that she can worship in peace without him. “In the emotional winds her domestic trials were borne far and wide so that she sang as she drove homeward.” ( 146) These proves that Delia has changed internally. The final and most surprsing change in Delia character which calls to question her faith happened at the very end of the story. Sykes is calling her for help and in agony from the snake bite and she decided to allow him die. Delia is standing at the door and sees him with his one open eye shinning with hope (148, ) as Hurtson write, “A surge of pity too strongs to support bore her away from that eye that must, could not, fail to see the tubs.” (148)
Delia faith and her marriage vows keeps her in this abusive relationship for years .She work hard to maintain the marraigae but could not stand it .Delia is not responsible for her husband being bitten by the snake,he has fallen into his own trap. She is a only gulity for not helping Sykes , a sin of ommission rather than a sin of commision .We can aruge here whether Delia is really guided by her faith. This only goes to show that as a human being ,our faith is week at times .Delia can be consider as evil person at the end.
