According to the ILO’s report on “Global Employment and Social Trends”, the number of workers in vulnerable forms of employment is likely to increase in the years to come. Globally, the significant progress achieved in the past in reducing vulnerable employment has essentially stalled since 2012. In 2017, around 42 per cent of workers (or 1.4 billion) worldwide are estimated to be in vulnerable forms of employment, while this share is expected to remain particularly high in developing and emerging countries, at above 76 per cent and 46 per cent, respectively. Worryingly, the current projection suggests that the trend is set to reverse, with the number of people in vulnerable employment projected to increase by 17 million per year in 2018 and 2019.” What accounts for this trend?

As per ILO report on “Global Employment and Social Trends”, the trend is seems to be increasing for vulnerable employment. The major reasons behind this anticipation is the increasing global economic and social crisis. Earlier, the figures was opposite to this. In good economic growth times, such vulnerable employment was on a declining trend. It has been seen that vulnerable employment has decreased globally by 4% between 1998 and 2008 which is now seems to be increasing at a very fast pace. However, we will see that economic and social crisis in majorly found in case of developing countries where national economic structure is weak and social protection is less. This kind of employment is also directly proportional to poverty. We are about to see a major reflection of high vulnerable employment rates because of onset of economic crisis and decreased international Trade.
