Question

Aviation is a critical part of our national economy. It provides for the movement of people and goods throughout the world, enabling our economic growth. In the last 35 years, there has been a six-fold increase in the mobility provided by the U.S. air transportation system. At the same time, there has been a 60% improvement in aircraft fuel efficiency and a 95% reduction in the number of people impacted by aircraft noise. Despite this progress, and despite aviation’s relatively small environmental impact in the U.S., there is a compelling and urgent need to address the environmental effects of air transportation.

Thirty years ago, the environment was a footnote in most airport master plan documents. Today, it is a major component of every plan. As an airport planner and designer, you need to know why and understand the process.

Discuss the relationship between an airport master plan and the environment. Post a persuasive argument supporting either the economy or the environment when planning an airport. Consider which is more important to an airport planner when creating a Master Plan or Dynamic Strategic Plan. Explain your position.

Both the airport master plan and the environment have the major role in the planning of airport nowadays. While developing a master plan the main focus should have remained on the environment as it will decide and influence the operation of the airport and different factors which can affect the airport’s operations directly and indirectly.

Let us consider the example, if we do not focus on these factors, for example, wildlife management, then it will lead to some major consequences in the long run operations. Yes, the cost can be reduced in the short term as the cost of investing in in wild life deterrents or a biology department for the airport can be avoided but as per the findings of FAA during a 14 year period (1990-2004) wild life strikes accounted for 631,000 hours of aircraft downtime and approximately $495 million dollars per aircraft damage per year (FAA, 2006).

Wildlife hazards have the potential of hurting the aircraft during the vital phases of flight for example landing and takeoffs and thus there is a requirement of giving some major considerations to these factors. Similar to this, the importance of other factors such as hazardous waste, and other waste disposal concerns are equally as important as they also have some major dangers to the environment.

For example, there can be some points that it is not good to have the option of paying the fine to EPA for dumping fuel on the ground but it will results some of the major consequences such as ground water contamination may cause significant harm down the line environmentally. By having these factors into consideration, a lot of significance must be given to the environment by the airport planners rather than only focusing on the economy, as we know that by saving a dollar in short term can result in millions of dollars expenses in future to both the economy and the environment.
