Question

PA 3-2 A community health system's nurse team... A community health system's nurse team consists of 12 nurses working in the local community. It takes a nurse 1.5 hours to complete one patient visit (including travel times and breaks). Round "Utilization" to a whole percent, and "Cycle Time" to 1 decimal. What is the capacity of the nurse team over the course 72 per 9 hour work day of a 9 hour work day? Assuming the demand for the nurses is 60 patients per day, what is the utilization of the nurse team? 83 percent . Assuming the demand for the nurses is 60 patients per minutes per patient day, what is the cycle time?

Explanation / Answer

a) One nurse can complete one patient visit in 1.5 hours. So in 9 hour one nurse can complete 9/1.5 = 6 patient visit

Therefore in 9 hour 12 nurses can complete 12x6 = 72 patient visits

So the capacity of the nurse team over the course of 9 hour work day is 72.

b) Design capacity = 72 per day (calculated in part a)

Actual output = 60 patient per day

Utilization of the nurse team = (Actual output / Design capacity)

= (60/72)

= 0.83

= 83%

c) For one nurse production time per day = 9 hours = 540 minutes

For 12 nurses production time per day = 540 minutes x 12 = 6480 minutes. So for the nurse team production time per day = 6480 minutes

Output per day = 60 patients

Cycle time = production time per day / output per day

= 6480 minutes / 60 patients

= 108.0 minutes per patient
