The narrative voice ... enters a heavy, dreamlike mode. When the all clear finally sounds and the hum of the metropolis resumes, a central character, who has been venturing a flirtation with another passenger, is jolted into awareness that the possibilities unfolding 'while the city was sealed off' cannot belong to real like. Yet a form of life did surface: however fleetingly, ...enabling a different kind of humanity to emerge" (Puchner, 2012, p. 498).
"Sealed off" by Zhang Ailing is referred to as a psychological fiction where dreams and desires surface. How does the narrative language, description, dialogue, and repetition create the illusion of reality? Be sure to share a quote from the story to support your discussion.

The story is told from the 3rd person and has a limited view her straightforward reporting style allows a sympathetic view. You are able to see into both characters emotional state. The interpretation of even the title Sealed Off is noted and sets a stage for the reader to a war-ridden state. The city is sealed off but the story doesn’t go into detail on how it is, this is left up to the reader to use imagination. The tow characters Cuiyan and Zongzhen are sealed off and distant to the people in their lives both professionally and personally.
"I don't know why, every evening when the time rolls around; I go home. What home? I don't really have a home." He removed his glasses, held them up to the light, wiped off the moisture with his handkerchief. Another little cough. "So–I just have to keep going on, and try not to think about it. I can't start thinking about it!" Cuiyuan always felt a certain revulsion when a nearsighted person removed his glasses in front of others. It was indecent, like taking off your clothes in public.
I chose this particular quote from the story because it shows a glimpse of what his personal life is and by removing his glasses it also captures a period of vulnerability. Most people tend to guard themselves and only show others what they think they want to see, by taking off his glasses he is showing a side that is uncensored.

I would like to explain the leadership traits of Mr. Mandela, his approach to Change Management, Mandela’s way to achieve results by communicating and motivating others which are relevant to this post.
Leadership traits of Mr. Mandela:
He is a man of stillness. He exhibited his powerful presence and defused enemies through his adorable smile. He explained the world of forgiveness and what it looks like. Very optimistic, pondering about what & how certain things could be positive. He saw the big picture and is a futurist leader. His thoughts on vision, mission, and objectives are way beyond his self-orientation. His patience towards issues was remarkable. He is determined and robust. Very humble & down to earth person. Very hopeful and passionate about things he does.
Nelson Mandela’s approach to change management:
In order to close the gap between the demoralized and the tormenter, Nelson Mandela brought the fire from South Africa. His knowledge demonstrates transformational leadership and effective change management… For more than 200 years, South Africa was ruled and governed by a white minority government though blacks were 75% of the population. Whites owned the majority of the local property, was running the business, they controlled the natural resources of the country, they mentioned blacks do not have the right to vote and they often worked for very little wages or every now and then made to be slaves.
Mandela responded to the domination of white-minority rule by initiation of the African National Congress and instigated strikes that promoted the acts of disrupting to pressure the South African government to change in response to the killing and injury of blacks… He was arrested in 1962 and spent 27 years in jail. He continued to promote civil unrest due to white’s domination and majority rule which resulted in International recognition. He was conditionally turned down from prison in 1985, due to the high amount of pressure by the then South African president Klerk to release Mr. Mandela unconditionally. Eventually, Mandela influenced Klerk to sign papers that explained multiparty elections. Mandela won the 1994 national election and was the first to honestly demonstrate democratic leadership in South Africa.
Mr. Mandela’s transformational and change management criteria’s were: He danced with the system and minded people; he stimulated the network and changed the environment with his information, identity, incentives, infrastructure, and institutions.
Mr. Mandela’s way to achieve results by communicating and motivating others:
Nelson Mandela initiated a combination of cognitive, expressive and behavioral traits that brings deep change in South Africa.
Anticipative - He looked ahead & was able to see and envision that South Africa’s situation will not survive from the futuristic perspective. From the jail, he was able to assess his moves and expected certain types of reactions from white’s.
He challenged – He was an odd one out as a man of fundamental dignity and courage among the co-prisoners and security guards. He was willing to sacrifice his life for the ones that he believed. Amidst harsh punishment, he gained energy to challenge the whites and not ready to accept the situation and through his word and symbol, he continued to challenge the system that opposed his liberty.
He interpreted – As a masterstroke of representation & symbolic icon, Mandela invited his prison security guards to his swearing-in ceremony when he won the national election. He Interpreted that South Africa could flourish as a multi-racial society only when leaders forgive each other mutually.
Some of the key lessons from Mandela’s leadership qualities are, Always aim towards the long-term goal, realize that the system drives people’s behavior, Identify the good inside each and every people, Ordinary people always put their personal interest in an ideology or a social cause, do not mention anything unless it serves and clarifies the purpose.
