Question
It has been estimated that the average person may be exposed to over 1,500 ad or brand communications per day. Keep a diary of all the significant ads, commercials, billboards, pop-ups, and "spam” messages you receive in a three day period. Reflect on which ads you remember, which ones were successful in persuading you to take action to buy a product or service, and which ones had absolutely no effect on you and for what reasons. Discuss your impressions of the results of this exercise. Which communication method is most effective for you? Do you feel manipulated by the marketplace in making decisions about which products or services you use and why?
Explanation / Answer
There are so many ads and brand campaigns that are bombarded through social media and traditional media sources every single day. These ads contain lot of brand messages that persuade the customers to buy the product.
The past three days saw the careful consideration of the ads that I came across on social media and traditional media. There were so many ads that have made a strong impression because of their unique strategies. Carlsberg for example did a social media ad that was a unique experiment. It was based along the lines of having a good time with your friends over a drink. It played a prank by testing the friends of few individuals that they chose for testing. The individuals were asked to call their friends in the middle of the night and come with 300 dollars for losing a poker game. When their friends arrived at the building it was made to look like a dangerous underground situation with lot of illegal activities happening and dangerous people involved. It tested if their friends would stand up for them and come to the second floor to see them with the money. Their friends actually did and in the end the curtain was revealed showing Carlsberg. This is an effective ad and it communicated the important message of being their for your friends and having a good time. It made a strong effect on me because of its brand message and unique idea of using real people and a situation to test people.
The ad which did not make any difference was old spice ad which used women desiring men if they use the product. It is a clitched and unoriginal method of attracting the audience.
The exercise helped me to be more aware of the brand message that was being communicated. Anchor white toothpaste had an exaggerated funny ad about maintaining strong teeth. A woman makes cake for her husband which falls and breaks a tile. When he comes home and eats the same cake nothing happens to his teeth. His teeth are strong brushing his teeth with the toothpaste.
Yes I do feel that it was an effective communication and it made emergency want to purchase the product and use it got its strong effect one me.
