Question

You have just been hired as the director of operations for Reid Chocolates, a purveyor of exceptionally fine candies. Reid Chocolates has two kitchen layouts under consideration for its recipe making and testing department. The strategy is to provide the best kitchen layout possible so that food scientists can devote their time and energy to product improvement, not wasted effort in the kitchen. You have been asked to evaluate the two kitchen layouts and to prepare a recommendation for your boss, Mr. Reid, so that he can proceed to place the contract for building the kitchens.

The first kitchen layout is shown in Figure 2 below. The walking distance between the areas is in feet. For example, the distance from area 1 to area 2 is 5 feet, area 1 to area 5 is 13 feet.

a) For layout number one, the cumulative "load×distance" or "movement cost"equals=___ feet (enter your response as a whole number).

The walking distance between the areas is in feet For example, the distance from area 1 to area 2 is 5 feet, area 1 to area 5 is 13 feet Figure 2. Kitchen Layout #1

Explanation / Answer

Trips from the Refrigerator (1) = 10 to counter (2) + 13 to the sink (3) = 10x5+13x8 = 154

Trips from the Counter(2) = 5 to refrigerator (1) + 3 to the sink (3)+ 4 to the storage (4) + 8 to the stove (5)

= 5x5+3x4+ 4x8+ 8x11 = 25+12+32+88 = 157

Trips from the Sink (3) = 5 to the refrigerator (1) +14 to the counter (2) + and 5 to the storage (4)

= 5 x8+ 14x4+ 5x4 = 116

Trips from the storage (4) = 3 to the refrigerator (1) + 5 to the stove (5)

= 3x11+ 5x5 = 58

Trips from the stove (5) = 7 to the counter (2) + 4 to the sink (3) + 10 to the storage (4)

= 7x11+4x8+ 10x5 = 159

Total distance = 154+157+116+58+159 = 644
