Define the term "dominant culture", and in your own words give an example of an aspect of dominant culture in current American society.

The dominant culture in a society is the group who hold the norms of the society. They may be or may not be a majority. They yield power over other groups and have a major influence over other groups in terms of social norms, values, attitudes, and behavior. Their culture forms the standards or benchmarks for other culture

In the US, the dominant culture is formed by the whites of European origin. Form the majority and their cultural influences other cultures like African American, Latinos etc in the US

An important aspect of this culture is individualism – i.e. people give more importance to their sense of individualism and making their own path, more than family or community

How does this feature of dominant culture function within our society?

In the US, people give more importance individual feelings, talents and potentials. They feel more responsible for themselves and it is their duty to realize their potentials and talents. They also feel it is necessary to fulfill themselves in order to fulfill the needs of the society

This leads to us citizens moving and running towards a career. They give more importance to their individual values and career more than their family and community. They are very achievement oriented resulting in numerous innovations and growth. At the same time, this growing individualism also leads to the breakdown and discontinuity of family structure in the US. This also helps them to involve in a lot of charities and service work for self-fulfillment.

How did it function during the postwar era in the United States?

The baby-boomer generation (born between 1940-1960 approx) exhibits a lot of characters of individualism like self-reliance, self- expression, duty orientation with increased consumerism etc. They had the feeling that they are special. They used music as an expression of their self identity-rock & roll. They involved a lot in civil rights movements.

What are some of the values or mores present within this aspect of dominant culture?

Self- reliance is an important aspect of individualism. Egalitarianism and treating all equally with equal respect for other’s values is an also considered an extension of this individualism. Individualists also value arts, music, and innovation. This also respects the uniqueness of each individual; here people strive for their own success. Independence and individual rights are valued high
