SUBJECT:    The Walt Disney Company cut ties with Saudi Arabia Enterprise Corporation

Treating someone unfavorably because of the individual’s sex, whether they are applying for a job or a current employee is gender or sex discrimination. During the early years, women were not entitled to the same rights and privileges as men. Women were deprive from receiving proper education, they did not have any voice in the society. In the 1800’s the fight to achieve equality among men and women started and continued after the civil war. In America, the Wyoming Territory passed a law which allowed women to vote and serve on juries in 1869. With more women rejecting the traditional role of housewife and entering the work force, the congress passed the Equal Pay Act of 1963. It took years of battle and relentless efforts before equal rights in America slowly became ordinary.

In our current modern time, it is unfortunate that there are still women that are not given the right and just opportunities because of the lack of education and close-mindedness of people in some parts of the world. Recently, the United Nation identified Saudi Arabia as one of the worst nation to be a woman. In an effort to ensure our partners supports our values and commitment about equal rights; we have discontinued our partnership with the Saudi Arabia Enterprise Corporation after the company was proven of unlawfully discriminating women in their corporation.

We are glad to inform everyone that with your support, our company has been awarded as one of the women friendly workplace in America after rigorous evaluation. Equal rights mandatory training will be required for every member of the company to take to ensure proper education and awareness of each of our employees.

We support equality, we empower women, we welcome skilled and passionate people of different sexual orientation and we wish everyone all the best.

Sincerely,

Marco Roxas, Senior Vice President Human Resources

Assess the legal, compliance, and brand implications to stakeholders. Explain the legal aspects that must be considered with the communication, what compliance issues need to be addressed, and how the brand could be affected. Make sure you clearly identify the original communication you are referencing.

Explanation / Answer

The implications of this memo, in terms of legal, compliance and brands, to the stakeholders will be a positive one as the memo clearly highlights the fact that The Walt Disney Company will not tolerate gender discrimination in any form within the organization. The company deals with customers from all over the world and any form of gender discrimination (either of the employees or customers or any other stakeholder of the company) will hurt and damage the brand really badly. The internal memo clearly spells out the company’s stance on gender discrimination and alerts employees to never mete out unequal treatment to any individual. By clearly spelling out its stance on gender discrimination the company has, in a very strong way, reduced any legal and compliance fallouts that may occur in future. This augurs well for the stakeholders of the company. The legal aspects that should be considered with the communication is that the company should ensure that it has fool proof internal control in place so as to ensure that special treatment of any kind is not provided to members of a particular gender. The compliance has to be at the local as well as at the international level so as to ensure that no discrimination takes place at the several outlets, offices and workplaces of the company situated in different countries. Each country will have a different legal and compliance guidelines and the different guidelines should be covered comprehensively.

In terms of brand implications such a clear stance will help bolster the brand equity of the company in the long run and will cement its image as being one of the companies that support equal rights for everyone irrespective of their gender.
