Criminal Justice question
Congratulations! You are now the Chief (or Sheriff) of your very own agency. Your agency is approximately 500 sworn members and approximately 50 civilians that handle things like IT support, payroll and similar functions. The area your agency serves is broken into three area commands. Right now, each command has a Detective’s Office that has 7-12 detectives, 2-3 sergeants and a lieutenant in charge of the office. The Detective’s division has a Captain and a Commander, who is equal to an area commander, which manages the three offices of detectives. These detectives investigate all crimes that happen in their assigned area that includes property crime, homicide, sex offenses and all kinds of assaults. You are considering centralizing the detective’s office. The plan you are considering has three units of detectives: 1. Detectives that only investigate homicides, sex offenses and the other crimes related to that case. So, if a homicide occurs in the course of a robbery, these detectives will handle the investigation 2. A unit that handles the investigations of all robberies and burglaries. 3. The remainder of the detectives will handle all other types of investigations. These detectives will still be responsible for one of the area’s cases, even though they will work out of a central location. Examine how you think implementing the new model will affect the quality of the work of the detectives? Will this new policy result in better usage of resources or not and why? What other issues do you think may arise from this organizational shift with the detectives? You may also assume that concerns like vehicles, office space and the like are not issues. However, man power may be an issue.
Explanation / Answer
in simple way we are saying that the total work has been divided into different tasks based on its nature and formally we called it as division of work. when it comes to this situation, it may provide higher confusion and role conflict among the investigator. and some times it may leads to divisional conflict also.
if the departments co-ordinate and co-operate with each other, it is ok. but if they are not co-operated with each other, it is difficult to handle this kind of situation. and there are many chances to happens to this. its all about the people, not the resources or tools.
division of work is good for common activities, but for these kind, it may not give positive results.
