President of Washington Enterprise and controlled 16 plants throughout the South. Extensive evaluation of personal records revealed the name Sid Smith, assistant plant manager in Atlanta. He was high expereanced and highly regarded throughout the company. Impressed by Smith, was inclined to offer Smith the plant manager position. Mrs. Smith was to be asked to submit to a psychological examination before Mr. Smith be given a definate position. The president believed that Mrs. Smith exhibited certain traits of a neurotic or psychotic nature. Mr. Smith is outraged and demanded an apoligey and had no intention of following the president requast. He stated that his wifes health did not bare on his employability.

The main issue from a managerial stand point is the fact that the President of the company involved himself in Mr and Mrs Smith's personal life.There is no call for him to interject himself in the affairs of a candidate for employment. The problem is that Mr. Smith should be vetted and evaluated around his work performance and qualifications. His family and spouses health and state of mind have nothing to do with whether he can or can not perform his duties. The preferred outcome is simple,the President needs to make a formal apology and explain his actions to Mr. Smith. The resolution of the issue is simple,the President will base his hiring and firing practices around work performance,attendance,and qualifications. Time away from work attending to personal matter will in no way have any effect on an employee. Secondly a formal apology will be made and his actions will be explained.
