Morality is magnified when we consider leadership, & so the study of ethics is central to understanding leadership.

Leaders are expected to undertake responsibility — that’s a part & parcel of their job. Taking responsibility is distinct from really being responsible. Leaders who undertake responsibility are applauded/ condemned for what their organizations do. The matter of moral agency is also thought-provoking whilst we take into account the role of context & the luck in leadership. Some of the leaders are fortunate due to the socio-historical context which they are in & the reality that their initiatives turn up well for them. Others aren’t lucky as an accident, hurricane or some other unforeseeable occurrences wreck their most carefully made plans. Seldom do we regard someone as a great leader when he can’t get anything done, even if the cause of his failure is due to circumstances beyond his control.

The historian’s evaluation of leaders is also dependent on what philosophers term moral luck. Moral luck is one more way of thinking about the determinism/ free will problem in ethics. Persons are accountable for the free choices they make. We are usually not accountable for things over which we do not have any control. The most tough ethical decisions that leaders make are those where they can’t completely determine the result. Philosopher B. Williams explained moral luck as being intrinsic to an act based on how well an individual reflects through a decision & whether her inferences are sensible & turn up to be correct. He said that moral luck is exogenous to a decision also. Things such as bad weather; terrorists; malfunctioning of machinery etc can disrupt the most carefully made plans .
