Question

My Discussion Post:

When it comes to advertising, I make decision to buy product based on facts, rather than emotions. Because, most of the products are made to satisfy or meet our needs and advertising reflect on our needs describing facts related to it which will convince us to make purchase decision. For example, MyGlamm cosmetic brand advertise its wide range of products with the fact that they are multipurpose and are compact in size, travel friendly, cruelty free and vegan. These facts and features attract the customers and reflect their needs as well as their comfort and interest. This brand uses social media platforms like Instagram, their own website, YouTube, and demo videos, attractive offers and discounts, which makes me purchase the product. This campaign makes me to act because it offers multipurpose products, which can be carried easily, their tutorials and description seems attractive and most importantly their claim that products are vegan and cruelty free.

Student’s response on my post:

I agree on most of the points you make, but there are a few things you mentioned that I think are worthy of debate. While it's true to some degree that advertisements reflect our needs, I think they are actually more aimed at what we think we need. An advertisement focused on facts will only work when you already have a desire for that product category. Emotion-driven ads can cause you to desire (and ultimately purchase) something that you don't actually need at all. As an example, you say that you decide to use MyGlamm in part because of their dedication to vegan and cruelty-free products. This doesn't make their products superior to their competitors, and doesn't make you need their products more, but it does strike an emotional chord; you appreciate that the company protects animals.

In the end though, it all comes down to personal opinion. I may prefer emotive ads, but fact-driven ads have certainly been shown to sway their fair share of consumers.

How do I respond to him on his perspective?

Explanation / Answer

MyGlamm's dedication to vegan and cruelty-free products in itself is a fact which makes consumer's comfortable in the sense, no animal killing is involved. Many consumer do incoporate the checks like whether the product is sin free like made from vegans, organic, produced under conditions which are accepted, hence all are facts which contribute to the final purchasing decision out of the consideration set.
