9. A manufacturing process is comprised of three stations with single-machine stations. The average processing times on station A, B, C are 20, 15, and 12 minutes respectively. Assume that a finished part exits the process every 30 min. a. Which station is the bottleneck of this line? b. What are the bottleneck rate, raw process time, and critical WIP for the line? c. Consider a scenario where Station 2 is subject to random failure, which causes its uptime to be only 50% of what it should be. What happens to the critical WIP in this case? Show if this is good or bad for the production line, if the WIP level for the pr ocess is always 4.

Explanation / Answer

a. bottleneck is A as it takes the highest time

b.Bottleneck rate: 3 per hour ie 60/20. Raw process time: 47 mins, Critical WIP:3

c. if there is a 50% downtime, then the effective processing time for B will be 30 mins. the Critical WIP becomes 4 in this case, i.e. when A has finished processing but B is not ready to start a process, one item will be stuck between A and B. This is bad as there is excess WIP
