Question
8. An additive manufacturing process contains two processes: first to build a single part on a 3D printer, then post-processing of the part to remove the support structure thus, fabricating a finished part. Parts are ordered on the 3D printer every 30 minutes Process time for the printer and post-processing are 25 minutes and 20 minutes respectively. The working hour for the company is from 8 AM to 4 PM daily. a. What is the capacity of the entire process in a day? b. What is the utilization for both of the processes? c. What is the daily output of the entire process?Explanation / Answer
There are three consecutive activities with their corresponding processing time :
Ordering of parts = 30 minutes
Processing time for the printer = 25 minutes
Post processing operation = 20 minutes
Out of above , bottleneck activity is “Ordering of parts” since it has the maximum processing time part unit
The capacity of the overall process is determined by the activity time of bottleneck activity.
Therefore , capacity of the overall process = 30 minutes/ unit
Total available hours in aday ( 8 AM to 4 PM ) = 8 hours = 480 minutes
A, Capacity of the entire process in a day of 24 hours or 1440 minutes
= 1440/30 = 48
B. Utilization of Processing of printer = 25/30 x 100 = 83.33 %
Utilization of post processing operation = 20/30 x 100 = 66.67%
C. Daily output ( total available time = 480 mins) of entire process
= 480/ 30
= 16 units
