Question

Examples of projects abound on the Internet. These range from public projects (examples: buildings, bridges, tunnels), defense projects, space projects - to name but a few. Find an example of two different projects, and attempt to find the following information:

1. Lifecycle: Any evidence associated with the project lifecycle followed by the project. what does this mean?

2. Process framework: Any evidence suggesting that the project followed the Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge® process framework what does this mean?

3. Progress Monitoring and Control: Examples of how the project was monitored and controlled. I dont see how I can relate this to my project

4. Summary: Determine if the overall project was successful or not, and what factors led to the observed results. I dont see how I can relate this to my project

Explanation / Answer

Here, according to the question we need to take 2 different examples of project and need to answer the question asked above.

Therefore we here are taking the example of:-

1) Building up of the world's longest tunnel, Gotthard Base Tunnel

Gotthard base tunnel is the world's longest and deepest railway tunnel base in switzerland, has the length of 57 km and connects major cities of and near switzerland. To make and work upon such a grand project it requires huge number of resources (materials, human, technological & finacial resource). Along with this, the project do include the greater percentage of risk with it, such as geographical risk, human life risk, finacial return risk and so on.

2) Building up of satellite and sending it into space:-

Satellite is used for many of the purposes and application like communication, space and earth's exploration. Making and launching a Satellite is a huge project which help the people to know more about space's nature, earth and also enchance the communication, which taken to be as major source of growth. In particular we will take the example of Aryabhata satellite lauch by India on 19 April 1975.

1. LIFECYLCLE OF THE PROJECT:-

A Project Management has 4 phases, means every project goes through the 4 phase right from its initiation till its closure or completion. The phases are as follows:-

A. INITIATION:- Initation means starting of the project, it includes the generation of idea to make a particular project. In Initation process many things are taken under account and they are

{ In both the Examples, the project in its Initation phases has came up with the idea of their project i.e. to make satellite and tunnel. They then analyse whether this project can be possible to pursue or not. If yes, Then they automatically pushes into the another phase.

B.PLANNING:- Planniing process includes the following heads

{In both the examples, A strong planning was made. Planning regarding the whole project i.e. what the tunnel should be like whether it will be road tunnel or a railway. What areas it need to cover. What resouces it would be needing eg. how many machines will we need to employ, How many human resouce of what job qualification and skills will be required, how much funds we need to raise and from where the funds will come, from where we will buy your resource or materials needed. Who will be our suppliers? where as in the case of making a satellite, the same heads were planned properly, for eg, what are the materials we will be needing?, what type of people we need to hire? Who will be our suppliers? How to improve our quality and by what process we need to follow which reduces the chance of failure of our project.

C. EXECUTION:-

In this phase the person or team excecutes their's project. They execute it by start working upon it practically and physically. It includes the following tasks:-

[ In the above given examples, with regard to this phase the actual physical work has started. In tunnels the work of mining, cleaning up the area by taking out the mud from it, making of a strong base and roof so that the tunnel wont get damage in any disaster, laying of the tracks, their testing has begin. Where as in the case of satellite project, the assembling of the resouces, testing, quality checking has begin. Both these project has ensure the factors like cost, time bound, quality and risk involve while doing their tasks.

D. CLOSURE:- A closure is the completion of the project. In this phase the project is declared its completion and closure.

{In the above examples, both the project will be considered closure when both the projects are completed i.e. when the tunnel and satellite will be wholely completed and are ready to start and lauch. Fun fact is that the building of a tunnel project took over a decade to be declare as a closure. It tooked around 20 years to complete this project. Where as the Aryabhatta satellite was completelly made and is ready to launch.

PROJECT MANAGEMENT BODY OF KNOWLEGDE

There are around 10 Guides or body of knowledge upon which the project executes

when we start analysing, we will nnotice that all the above points has been included in the formation till closure of the above stated projects. All the guides whether of the human resourse managment or of managing or reducing risk, making qulaity product, analysing of scope, time and duration involve and the so on are included in such projects.

MONITORING AND CONTROL:-

Both the project involves greater and higher risk of failure. It is not easy to make a world's longest and deepest tunnel where as it is also not easy task to make and launch a satellite. In both the project a daily check up of the tasks done is necessary especially in the tunnel project where the tunnel has to be build and go through inside of the mountains. A proper planning is reqired and has done also. Launching a satellite is not a cup of tea, it do involves the phases where the experiment done doesnt yield any progress to the work and may rather put all the efforts to its foundation level. Controlling the risk that could be happne during the task is on of the majors in elemination of risk.

PROJECT SUCCESS OR FAILURE:-

Both the project was a huge success to the world. With such a great idea generation and planning, both the projects were a boom to the society. And to determine that whether our project is a success or not, we need to consider the main objective that we decided at the time of budding up of that particular idea in our head. If that objective is meet after the completion and considered that our project was a success. In the project of tunnel, the basic motive was to build a transportation line for the society so that it will become easy for them to roam and move from one place to another. Where as in the Satellite project the basic motive was to enhance communication and growth of the country. Both these projects got succed in their respective objectives.
