Question

For this question consider hiring another worker and duplicating Operation C as shown in the diagram below. The two workers work on successive products; they don’t work on the same product at the same time. The product still requires the five Steps (A, B, C, D, E)

Consider the process shown in Question 2. A proposal has been made to combine the two operations A and B. In other words, the two workers currently working on A and B separately, will now each do both A and B before passing the unit on to one of the two workers the next station (C). This involves an additional minute switching from A to B, so the time needed to do both A and B becomes 8 minutes. What is the impact of this proposal on the process – cycle time, capacity in an 8-hour day, and overall utilization?

4 min 8 min 6 min 5 min 3 min 8 min

Explanation / Answer

Subsystem 1 = A and B

Sub system 2 = 2 items of C

Sub system3 = D

Sub system 4 = E

The effective processing time of the subsystem 1

= Total processing of A+B/ 2 ( i.e. number of workers)

= 8 /2

= 4 minutes

The effective processing time of the subsystem 2

= 8/2

= 4 minutes

The effective processing time of the subsystem 3

= 6 minutes

The effective processing time of subsystem 4

= 5 minutes

Out of above, subsystem 3 is the bottleneck since it has the maximum effective processing time of 6 minutes.

The cycle time of the whole process will be same as the processing time at bottleneck susbsystem.

Therefore, cycle time of the proposed system = 6 minutes/ product

Capacity of the system in an 8 hour ( i.e. 480 minutes ) day = 480 / 6 = 80 products

Overall utilization of the system

= Sum of effective processing time of 4 subsystems/ ( 4 i.e. number of subsystem x 6 minutes cycle time)x 100

= ( 4 + 4 + 6 + 5 ) / ( 4 x 6 ) x 100

= ( 19/24) x 100

= 79.17% ( rounded to nearest whole number )

CYCLE TIME = 6 MINUTES

CAPACITY IN AN 8 HOUR DAY =80 PRODUCTS

OVERALL UTILIZATION OF THE SYSTEM = 79.17%

CYCLE TIME = 6 MINUTES

CAPACITY IN AN 8 HOUR DAY =80 PRODUCTS

OVERALL UTILIZATION OF THE SYSTEM = 79.17%
