Explanation / Answer

1. It is the responsibility of business leaders to take positive actions to improve the world’s freshwater supply. Companies and their leaders should, as a part of their social responsible initiatives, should take steps and actions to arrest the rapidly declining reserves of freshwater across the globe. It is the duty and responsibility of a company, as a responsible social entity, to give back to the society and environment on which it depends and is reliant to conduct its business. Thus business leaders should be pro-active in the area of improving freshwater supply.

2. I do not think that Coca-Cola and Nestle are engaging in any form of public relations gimmick in their efforts to improve the quality of local water supplies. These companies are dependent on the quality of water available in different parts of the world to manufacture and sell their products. Coca-Cola uses freshwater across the globe to manufacture its beverages. Similarly Nestle is also reliant on spring water to make and sell its bottled water. What they are doing (by trying to improve the quality of local water supplies) is that they are simply securing their future operations. If freshwater is not available in future their businesses and operations will take a big hit and they are simply trying to avoid such a situation. Secondly these companies also realize that it is their social responsibility to protect the environment from which it is drawing resources for its business.

3. The benefits that might come back to Coca-Cola and Nestle from their investments of resources in producing potable water are that it will secure the future of these company’s operations. Sustainable availability of potable water is essential for the operations of these companies. Secondly the companies will stand to benefit as these conservation activities will enhance their brand equity and increase the amount of goodwill that they enjoy in the market. As such the level of trusts and confidence of the consumers will increase towards the products of these companies.

4. The information presented here about Coca-Cola and Nestle has influenced me in a positive manner. I now realize that these two companies are socially responsible entities and hence by consuming their products I am also contributing to preserving the environment in an indirect manner. My knowledge of the initiatives of these two companies will hence definitely propel me to buy the products of these two companies and give them more weight-age and consideration over products being sold by their competitors.
