Question

Scenario 3:
Fabrication
Shawn is assigned a paper on biases in the judicial system. Shawn is having difficulty figuring out where to find sources for this topic. He has searched online and once briefly in the Ashford University Library databases but has not found what he is looking for: statistics of the number of people currently in jail in the United States versus 10 years ago. Feeling overwhelmed and frustrated, Shawn decides that he knows enough about this topic to guess an average number. He writes, “The number of incarcerated males in America has increased by 10% in the last 10 years.”

Write a paragraph of advice for Shawn explaining why creating a fact statistic is wrong and what he should do differently next time. Explain to Shawn what he should have done in this situation instead of fabricating a statistic.

Explanation / Answer

Creating a fact statistic typically is wrong because it misleads at times. The results which are obtained by this method may not reflect the actual scenario. It is quite important to note that a fact statistic created from survey questions that seek to answer questions that specific and are tailored to obtain a given response, hence cannot portray a true representation of the population under study.

. For Shawn to know that fabrication is wrong he must first understand what it means. Fabrication is defined as to fake;forge(a document,signature,etc.).I would explain that creating fact statistics is wrong because it gives the audience of his paper false information. What he should have done differently is reach out to his teacher or ask his peers for help. If he was struggling with where to look for the information he needed, he should have asked for help and then furthered his research.

Thus, next time he should not create a fact statistic as it can mislead the outcome
