Question

1. If groups are to create positive synergy in the accomplishment of organisational tasks, what must managers do to overcome disruptive behaviours?

2. Until recently, your group of seven members has been operating successfully and you felt it was achieving high levels of effectiveness. However, since two members left your team (and the organisation) to go to other jobs and you replaced them with two new members (one from outside the organisation and one from another organisational section), there is less group cohesion and more conflict. Discuss the reasons why these changes might have occurred and use theories and concepts about groups to explain them.

3. Explain the key differences between teams and groups and the reasons organisations might wish to instigate teams in their organisations.

Explanation / Answer

Groups are to create synergies within the team. Here are few of the things that managers can do in order to avoid any distruptive behaviour within the teams:

1. Reminding the groups of common objective and mission and the reasons why we need to work as a team. This increases the morale within the members of the group as they know exactly why they are sopposed to work in groups rather than individual capacity.

2. Setting clear expectations and making sure that the roles, responsibilities and accountability of each individual is clearly defined. This makes sure that there are minimal conflicts of interest within the group members.

3. Congratulating the whole team on the success rather than just one or two members.

4. Continuosly recognizing people who are making efforts to make group work efficiently.

5. Keeping a proper track of group performance and mentoring the outliers to support the team better.
