a. Find the cycle time required to meet the desired output rate

Time available per day = 9.5 hours *60 minutes * 60 seconds = 34,200 seconds

Units required = 900 units per day (demand)

Cycle Time = Time available per day/ Units required per day

=34,200 seconds / 900 units = 38 seconds per unit

Therefore cycle time is 38 seconds per unit.

b. What are the theoretical number of workstations required to meet the desired output rate

The theoretical number of workstations = Total time or sum of required for all the task / cycle time

= 156 seconds / 38 second = 4.11 or 5 workstations (next whole number)

d. The line balancing table by using longest operating time rule (also have to maintain precedence and not exceeding cycle time) –

Workstation (cycle time= 38 seconds)
